Statement
My art broadcasts transgender and cisgender gay male identities and navigates my relationship with being a gay, transgender man. Using a variety of mixed media materials, I explore the idea of self-expression and communication through clothing.
Archetypes of male dominance such as black leather and cowboys, both vehemently and undeniably masculine, are reframed using embroidery, glittered PVC body harnesses, pastel faux fur and sequins. Iconic gay imagery is appropriated and transformed to dismantle the widely perceived view of gay male domination.
The use of plush toys in my art draws upon youth and is symbolic of comfort. Its juxtaposition of sexual themes with playful imagery diffuses the level of beginner intimidation regarding the untried or unknown. Transgender men within gay circles are often dismissed or subjected to implied sexual submission, thus the display of once passive stuffed animals engaging in sexual antics advocates for a change in how dominance is perceived.
My work elevates the normally private affair of sexual relationships and the world of gay men’s secretly coded visual conversations into the public domain of art.
